There was a period of time where I was considering if the act of enforcing the sabbath was beyond mere directive, and perhaps also a method of conveying existence endorsing…….”best practices”????
I personally believe few things have the characteristic of being able to impact a person’s development and growth in only a single aspect. Instead, my assumption is that automatic connectivity between the many different layers of a person, i.e. their maturity, their personality, their defining beliefs. Each concept of the individual innately relates to, and participates with, the other relative concepts – resulting in a web, not an onion.
With the above in mind, I decided to intentionally try to “observe” the Sabbath. I’m gonna preface the inspection with, I am aware the details of the Sabbath are…..varying …..across the different religions. For the sake of reference, I went with sundown Friday evening to sundown Saturday evening. Electric lighting was permitted, but all other electronics were not (phone on – but no interacting with – a miracle of God empowering in itself). Cooking dinner was not permitted. No planning or problem solving was permitted. Couldn’t think about work, hobby, etc. No reading or creating. No writing.
Regretfully, I was forced to deviate from what I assumed a typical weekly practiced observation of the Sabbath would automatically assume – the socialization with your family.
I questioned if phone usage for family socializing should be permitted. I chose not to.
The first few occurrences were rough. The total absence of stimuli was somewhat startling at first. You kind of starting noticing things that never stood out to you before.
